Scott Jobless Rate Up 0.4 Percent In January

Nashville, TN (2010-03-11) The jobless rate increased in Scott County in January, as the unemployment rate climbed another 0.4 percentage point over the month.  While the jobs picture remains bleak locally, jobless rates in other counties also climbed sharply, resulting in Scott County falling to 8th overall in the state ranking.  Pending layoffs in April will likely change the county’s position. New Study Suggests Pre-K Has Real But Limited Benefits

Nashville, TN (2010-03-09) A new report released by the state Comptroller’s Office of Research and Education Accountability (OREA) suggests that some students who attend state-funded pre-kindergarten (pre-K) programs perform better during their first two years of school. Federal Farm Assistance Announced

Nashville, TN (2010-03-08) Governor Phil Bredesen today announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved his request for federal farm assistance for seven additional Tennessee counties due to excessive rain and flooding that occurred in September and October. Bredesen made the request to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack last month. President Extends Unemployment Insurance Deadline

Nashville, TN (2010-03-04) An emergency act signed into law Tuesday night by President Obama will allow many of Tennessee’s unemployed more time to receive unemployment benefits. The measure extends the eligibility period from February 28 to March 30 to transition into existing extended benefit programs. The new law; however, does not add additional weeks of benefits to any of the existing federal extensions of unemployment insurance. [ Read More ]

January Unemployment Rate 10.7 Percent

Nashville, TN (2010-03-04) Tennessee Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development James Neeley announced today Tennessee’s unemployment rate for January was 10.7 percent, unchanged from the revised December rate of 10.7 percent.
