Obed Wild and Scenic River Announces Birding Walk with Dr. Charles P. Nicholson on Saturday, April 14

Nicholson on Saturday, April 14, 2018.  Dr. Nicholson holds a bachelor’s degree and PhD from the University of Tennessee and a master’s degree from the University of Maine and is a retired National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) manager from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Wildflower Walk: Cumberland Trail Obed Section to Alley Ford, April 13

Wartburg, TN (2018-04-07)  Get out and explore YOUR park!  The Obed Wild and Scenic River will be conducting a ranger-led wildflower walk on Friday, April 13, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. (ET).  Join Ranger Rick Ryan for a moderate out and back hike of 5 miles total along the Cumberland Trail section to Alley Ford.  Along the way, accompanied by the park’s botanist, we will discuss the local wildflowers in bloom, plant communities, and forest ecology.  This is a spectacular time of year to witness nature’s grand showing of flora. Annual Obed WSR River Cleanup Set for March 31

Wartburg, TN (2018-03-25) On Saturday, March 31, Obed Wild and Scenic River and Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning are working together to host a river-based cleanup of the section of the Obed River between the Devil’s Breakfast Table and Nemo.  This 11-mile section of stream is one of the most dramatic in the park, featuring towering cliffs and a sense of remoteness rarely found in today’s world.  Experienced whitewater paddlers are welcome to join in the cleanup but must provide their own whitewater boat, personal floatation device, helmet and appropriate river attire.  Paddlers should be highly proficient in Class III/IV whitewater. Planned March/April Bald Knob Prescribed Fire at Big South Fork NRRA

Oneida, TN (2018-03-13)  If conditions are met and remain favorable, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area will conduct the Bald Knob prescribed fire operation over the next three weeks.  Bald Knob is located in the Kentucky side of the park.  This operation will take place in approximately 2,000 acres between Waters Cemetery Road and Ledbetter multi-use trail.  The entirety of the fire will be within park boundaries.
