Escape Leads To Lockdown Of Burchfield Elementary

Oneida, TN (2011-10-11) An attempted escape by an inmate from the Scott County Jail led to the lockdown of Burchfield Elementary School Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Scott County Sheriff’s Department, Daryl Rowland Overbay, age 41, of Jacksboro attempted to escape from custody while being seen in the emergency department at St. Mary’s Medical Center of Scott County.  Overbay, who was reportedly transported to the facility for treatment of the possible ingestion of illicit drugs, allegedly fled the emergency department around 1:15 p.m., leading officers to comb the area west of the facility.  About an hour later, Overbay was captured near the intersection of Baker Street and W. Third Avenue.  He was reportedly found hiding under some bushes by the department’s canine, Saxon, who had tracked the suspect through the neighborhood.

As a precautionary measure, Burchfield Elementary School was locked down for a short period of time, as authorities searched the area near the school.

Overbay, and his wife, identified as Robin Faye Overbay, 39, also of Jacksboro, was arrested Monday night on drug charges.  The pair was charged with promotion of the manufacture of methamphetamine, manufacture of a schedule I controlled substance, simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a schedule II controlled substance, violation of the seat belt law, and violations of the drug free school zone act.

As result of his attempted flight from justice, Daryl Overbay has also been charged with felony escape.  He is currently being held at the Scott County Jail without bond.

Bond for Robin Overbay has been set at $150,000.

Several officers from the Oneida Police Department and Chief Steve Trammell of the Winfield Police Department assisted the Sheriff’s Department in Overbay’s capture.
