School Board Conducts Business In Brief Session

            Huntsville, TN (2011-06-09) The Scott County Board of Education met in a brief but busy session last Thursday night.

            In its regular monthly meeting, the Scott County Board of Education approved several measures to finalize the current fiscal year budget, while also preparing for the upcoming school year.

            By unanimous vote, the Board accepted a grant from the Dollar General Foundation for literacy programs at Scott High School and across the district.  While the district’s allocation was reportedly less than years past, it was fortunate to receive any funds, as only 30% of program funded by the Foundation last year will be funded in the upcoming academic year.  From the grants, Scott High will receive $5,000, while the school system will receive another $8,000 to spend across the district.  The grant was written locally by Nancy Stringer.

            As required by state law, the Board of Education approved its Coordinated School Health Continuation Application for the 2011-2012 school year.  Since 2006, local education associations have been required to implement a coordinated school health program to fight childhood obesity and other medical problems associated with being overweight.

            The Board also approved an amendment to its 2011-2012 school calendar, moving Fair Day from September 2, 2011 to August 26, 2011 and making March 6, 2012 a day out of school for the Tennessee Presidential Primary election.

            In other business, the Board:

  • Approved a series of budget amendments and transfers to its current 2010-2011 budget, measures designed to balance the books in preparation for the closing of the fiscal year on June 30, 2011.
  • Approved a contract with Goodwill Industries that will continue to allow students to work at the business and receive school-to-work experience;
  • Approved payment of membership dues to the National School Boards Association ($4,525.00) and Tennessee School Boards Association ($5,188.00)
  • Approved the 2011-2012 Carl Perkins budget for vocation education;
  • Gave the Scott County Finance Committee the authority to award the contract for refinishing gym floors throughout the district;
  • Asked the Finance Committee to bid several items, including a HVAC system for the Scott County Board of Education central office, a double oven for the Huntsville cafeteria and school buses;
