Officers Injured On Domestic Violence Call

Oneida, TN (2005-03-08) Two officers of the Oneida Police Department were injured early Tuesday morning after responding to a domestic violence call at a residence on Sand Cut Road.  One officer underwent surgery, while the other was treated and released from the local hospital.

According to Oneida Police Chief Mike Cross, Officers Paul Dean Adkins and Jason Pike responded to a domestic violence call around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at a home on Sand Cut Road.  After interviewing an unidentified female at the home, officers attempted to arrest Jason C. Lackey, 24, of Helenwood for domestic violence assault. After officers informed Lackey he was under arrest, he attempted to flee.  As officers grabbed Lackey, a struggle ensued.  During the tussle, the two officers and the suspect fell through a glass door, all sustaining lacerations.       As the scuffle continued, a dog also attacked officers.  A Chow bit Officer Pike multiple times on the thigh.

After Lackey was detained, Officer Adkins called for assistance.  Winfield Police Chief Steve Trammell, who was patrolling north of Oneida, was the first to respond.  Chief Cross and two units from the Scott County Sheriff’s Department also arrived.  Chief Trammell transported Adkins to the Scott County Hospital, where he was treated for a deep laceration to the left foreman and transferred via private vehicle to U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville.  Adkins later underwent surgery at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville to repair tendon damage. Officer Pike was treated and released from the Scott County Hospital.

Since the dog involved in the incident hadn’t been vaccinated, it has been quarantined for 14 days at a local veterinary clinic.  A Scott County court will determine the fate of the dog.

Lackey was arraigned in Scott County General Session Court Wednesday morning.
