Oneida Woman Killed in Traffic Accident in the Great Smoky Mountains

Gatlinburg, TN (2018-12-01) An Oneida woman was fatally injured in a single-vehicle traffic accident on Newfound Gap Road in Sevierville early Saturday morning.

Wanda Strunk, 62, of Oneida was reportedly fatally injured early Saturday morning when the truck she was in left the roadway and plunged 40-feet into the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River.  According to the National Park Service, Strunk was a passenger in a 2014 GMC pickup truck that left the roadway while negotiating a curved bridge near the entrance to the Chimneys Picnic Area on Newfound Gap Road.  The truck left the roadway, plunged over a 40-foot embankment, and ended up in the chilly waters of the river.

Authorities didn’t say whether the driver of the truck, identified as Lawrence Gallagher, 63, of LaFollette, sustained any injuries in the accident.  The crash occurred around 7:11 a.m. about six miles south of Gatlinburg.

Parks rangers from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, along with the park’s technical Search and Rescue Team, Sevier County Rescue Squad, Gatlinburg Fire Department, and Gatlinburg Police Department responded to the scene.
