Wartburg, TN (2018-08-06) Get out and explore YOUR Obed Wild and Scenic River! The Obed Wild and Scenic River will be conducting a hike on Friday, August 10, at 10:00 a.m. (ET). Ranger Rick Ryan will lead a moderate to strenuous out-and-back hike of 4.2 miles total on the Point Trail to the iconic park landforms of Lilly Arch and Tierrany Wall.
Along the way, the trail will pass several high vantage points of the river below, culminating on an exposed ridge where hikers can look on either side of the trail down into the river gorges of Clear Creek and the Obed River. Observant hikers will find a hidden gem near the end of the trail: the Lilly Arch rising almost 50 feet from its base to its top. A short descent below the rim of the gorge leads to Tierrany Wall, an imposing wall of rock overhung by an enormous roof that forms a natural amphitheater that is popular with rock climbers.
Participants should meet at the Lilly Overlook parking area. The parking area is located just after crossing the Lilly Bridge on Ridge Road in Morgan County, Tennessee. Please wear weather appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes or boots, and bring water and snacks. Hikers are also welcome to bring well-behaved dogs on a leash. Participants should expect to spend 3-4 hours for this hike. For more information, please contact the visitor center at (423) 346-6294.
