Huntsville, TN (2018-04-17) A Campbell County couple is facing child abuse and neglect charges after the pair allegedly smoked marijuana inside a car with a one-year old infant in the vehicle with them.
Jerrod L. Ford and Tamera D. Bartlett, both 19, of Lafollette were booked into the Scott County Jail on Sunday following a traffic stop in Huntsville. According to an arrest warrant written by Drug Interdiction Officer Keith Hawkins, the couple was allegedly smoking weed in the car as they traveled from Campbell County en route to Fentress County. At the time, Deputy Hawkins says Bartlett’s one-year-old child was strapped in the back seat and inhaling the secondhand smoke.
Authorities say Ford, who was driving at the time of the stop, was pulled over for driving 31 m.p.h. in a 55 m.p.h. speed zone and for not having a light over his license plate. When Ford rolled down the window, Deputy Hawkins says a strong odor of marijuana emanated from the car. Authorities say Ford’s eyes were bloodshot, he had a false perception of time, and his eyelids and torso were affected by tremors.
Bartlett reportedly told officers she had been driving, but had turned over the wheel to Ford after she became too impaired to drive.
The couple reportedly surrendered the remains of a smoked joint to authorities.
Ford was charged with DUI, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and child abuse and neglect. Barlett was charged with DUI by allowance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and child abuse and neglect.
