Oneida, TN (2018-02-13) A man accused of stealing items from a local retail store was found hiding in a brush pile last week.
Derek C. Phillips, 32, of Oneida was booked into the Scott County Jail last week after he allegedly took several small items from the Oneida Walmart Supercenter. According to an arrest warrant written by Patrolman Skylar Chambers of the Oneida Police Department, Phillips was detained by the store’s loss prevention employees, but fled on foot before authorities arrived. He was later found hiding in a brush pile near an Oneida apartment complex.
Authorities say Phillips took about $60 worth of goods from the store, including cell phone accessories, a pocket knife and cologne. Phillips was apparently caught by store employees, who attempted to detain him, but he fled on foot from the store. Shortly thereafter, K-9 Deputy Daniel Garrett and his partner found Phillips hiding in a brush pile next to Blue Ridge Apartments in Oneida.
Phillips had reportedly been caught stealing from Walmart in the past and wasn’t allowed on any Walmart-owned properties.
He was charged with theft of less than $1000, criminal trespass, and violation of probation.
