UPDATED: 10/13/17 @ 12:15 p.m. Authorities identify victim of fatal Winfield traffic crash.
Winfield, TN (2017-10-13) One person has been fatally injured in a two-vehicle traffic crash on Scott Highway near the Tennessee/Kentucky state line in Winfield.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, one person has died after a southbound passenger car crossed into the path of a northbound tractor-trailer just north of Ross Lane in Winfield. The victim has been identified as Alex Hixson, 39, of Somerset, the driver of a 2003 Chevy Malibu.
According to a report filed by Trooper Michael Wilson, Hixson was southbound on the highway, when he lost control of his vehicle and veered into the northbound lane and struck a tractor-trailer head on.
Glendale L. Morford, 55, of Lexington, KY, the driver of the 2015 Freightliner that was hauling car parts, was injured in the accident.
Debris from the accident blocked both lanes of U.S. 27 for more than four hours, as authorities worked the scene. Responders included the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Scott County Rescue Squad, and Winfield Fire Department.
Thursday’s accident was the second fatality on U.S. 27 in two days. Wednesday morning at approximately 6:51 a.m., a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 27 in McCreary County resulted in the death of a Pine Knot man. Ronald W. Jones, 48, died from injuries received in the accident, which occurred at the intersection of U.S 27 and Hwy 90. According to a report filed by Traffic Collision Reconstructionist Trooper Dackery Larkey of the Kentucky State Police, Samantha A. Morgan, 21, of Parkers Lake was traveling westbound on Hwy 90 in a 2004 Toyota Corolla, when she made a left turn onto U.S. 27 in the path of Jones’ northbound 2002 Dodge Neon. After the crash, Morgan’s vehicle became disabled in the roadway and was struck by a northbound 2002 Mercury Sable, driven by Jamie D. Lyons, 43, of Whitley City. Morgan was transported from the scene to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. Lyons was not injured.
Kentucky authorities say Jones was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the McCreary County Coroner’s Office.

According to Scott County Sheriff Ronnie Phillips, one person has died in the accident, which reportedly involved a tractor trailer and passenger car. The accident, which occurred around 10:28 a.m. Thursday morning, blocked both north and southbound lanes of traffic and snarled traffic in the area for more than four hours.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
In addition to the Sheriff’s Office, the Scott County Rescue Squad, Scott County Ambulance Service, and Winfield Fire Department responded to the scene.
