Healthy Hike: The Point Trail to Lilly Arch, September 16

Wartburg, TN (2017-09-10)  The Obed Wild and Scenic River will be conducting a healthy hike on Saturday, September 16, at 10:00 a.m. (ET).  Ranger Rick Ryan will lead a moderate to strenuous out-and-back hike of 4 miles total on the Point Trail to Lilly Arch.  Along the way, the trail crosses Melton Mill Branch on a bridge nestled deep within the hush of the hemlock forest canopy and green walls of mountain laurel and rhododendron.  The trail culminates on an exposed ridge with a panoramic overlook above the confluence of the Obed River and Clear Creek.  In places, hikers can look down on either side and see the water flowing hundreds of feet below, with the distant sounds of rushing water resonating off of the canyon walls.  Observant hikers will find a hidden gem near the end of the trail; the Lilly Arch rising almost 50 feet from its base to its top.

Participants should meet at the Lilly Overlook parking area.  The parking area is located just after crossing the Lilly Bridge on Ridge Road in Morgan County, Tennessee.   Please wear weather appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes or boots, and bring water and snacks.  Hikers are also welcome to bring well-behaved dogs on a leash.  Participants should expect to spend 3-4 hours for this hike.  For more information, please contact the visitor center at (423) 346-6294.
