Jewel Chitwood, age 98 of Winfield, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at the Huntsville Manor.
A beautiful difference one life was made for so many people. It is never easy to sum up a long life or the impact that Jewel Chitwood made while on this earth in a few short words of tribute.
Throughout her almost 99 years on this earth, she was known as an extraordinary woman. Even as a child, she was beautiful inside and out. She had an inner beauty shining brightly through her smile. She was so deeply devoted to her family and was, in the true sense of the word, a matriarch.
She brought kindness to everything she did. She had unsurpassed work ethic and morals instilled the same upon her children and grandchildren. She believed hard work was a pleasure and insisted that her children adopt this theory.
Her life was filled with challenges. She was always embarrassed by her lack of formal education. What she lacked in formal education, she made up for in common sense. She just always knew the right thing to do and how to do it. She was always confident that she was right.
She raised her children in the church learning to know and serve the Lord and to stay busy every day. So much so, that even today and her their senior, they feel guilty taking a much needed time of rest, because their mother never did. She continued to go strong until late 2015 when she had a bad fall that changed everything for her and everyone that loved her.
We can remember, when our daddy, her husband Glen Chitwood, was alive, he called her from the kitchen one Sunday morning and said with his unforgettable grin “I’ve been reading about you in the Bible”. “You have? What did it say?” He turned to Proverbs 31 10-31 and read to her about the Virtuous Woman.
Jewel joined the Pine Grove Baptist Church at age 12 and remained a faithful member there her entire life. She was their oldest member at the time of passing.
